Pop Warner thief gets 5 years probation
Associated Press
A man who stole money raised for two Manoa Pop Warner football teams was sentenced yesterday to five years probation and 500 hours of community service.
Circuit Judge Wilfred Watanabe gave Shane Santos, 31, credit for 145 days he spent in jail.
Prosecutors had asked for a sentence of 10 years in prison.
Santos pleaded no contest in April 2000 to six counts of second-degree theft and attempted theft.
He was accused of stealing about $8,000 raised through the sale of kalua pig tickets for the football teams' trip to Las Vegas, and $2,250 intended for travel expenses. His son played for one of the teams.
The thefts triggered community outrage because they jeopardized the trip, but donations allowed the teams to make it to Las Vegas. CORRECTION: The Associated Press erroneously reported in an earlier version of this story that Shane Santos, 31, was sentenced to five years in prison and 500 hours of community service for stealing money raised for two Manoa Pop Warner football teams. Santos was sentenced to five years probation and 500 hours of community service with credit for 145 days he spent in jail before the sentencing.
