College workshops to be held on Maui

KAHULUI, Maui — The Educational Opportunity Center at Maui Community College will be host to two free "Yes You Can" college entry workshops next month.

The workshops are open to anyone 17 or older who is interested in attending college, making a career change or seeking job retraining but doesn't know where to begin. Educational options, financial aid resources and other topics will be discussed.

The first workshop will be 5 to 7 p.m. June 7 in Ka Lama 102; the second is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 14 in the Ho'okipa Building.

Star-gazing, hike planned at park

HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK, Maui — Spend an afternoon in a native Hawaiian cloud forest during a five-hour hike Sunday in the Waikamoi Preserve.

The hike is sponsored by Haleakala National Park and The Nature Conservancy. The excursion is described as a moderately strenuous hike through wet and muddy terrain at high elevation.

Hikers should meet at noon at the Hosmer Grove parking lot. Wear shoes with good traction, rain gear, water, a snack, sunscreen and binoculars.

On May 26, the park staff will present "Kilo Hoku," a night of star-gazing and star lore. Participants should meet no later than 7:30 p.m. at the Hosmer Grove campground. Bring a beach mat or blanket to sit on, a red-filtered flashlight, binoculars and a hot beverage.

The "Kilo Hoku" program will be offered again June 16.

Although both events are free, the park entrance fee is $10 per vehicle. Call (808) 572-4459 for more information.


Maui group to hold fashion show

KAHULUI, Maui — The Japanese Cultural Society of Maui will hold a kimono fashion show and luncheon at 11 a.m. June 23 at the Maui Beach Hotel.

Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at Credit Associates of Maui, 1817 Wells St. in Wailuku or by calling Lynn Araki at (808) 244-6042.
