Pop Warner theft results in probation

A man who stole money raised for two Manoa Pop Warner football teams was sentenced Wednesday to five years' probation and 500 hours of community service.

Circuit Judge Wilfred Watanabe gave Shane Santos, 31, credit for 145 days he spent in jail.

Prosecutors had asked for a sentence of 10 years in prison.

Santos pleaded no contest in April 2000 to six counts of second-degree theft and attempted theft.

He was accused of stealing about $8,000 raised through the sale of kalua pig tickets for the football teams' trip to Las Vegas, and $2,250 intended for travel expenses. His son played for one of the teams.

The thefts triggered community outrage because they jeopardized the trip, but donations allowed the teams to make it to Las Vegas.

Two arrested in Kalihi home invasion

Police arrested two Wai'alae men on suspicion of first-degree robbery in connection with a home invasion Wednesday morning in Kalihi. Police believe three robbers confronted a Makiki couple on Kewalo Street just before 6:10 a.m.

The robbers, one of them armed, escorted the man to his apartment and then searched it. The man fled and called police.

Police said captured fugitive Arthur Birano is the third suspect in the case.
