Track meet gets late start on Maui

By Dennis Anderson

WAILUKU, Maui — Gone to Maui was easier said that done last night for athletes flying from other islands for the Island Movers State Track and Field Championships.

All public school teams flew Hawaiian Airlines because the state has a contract with Hawaiian to fly at a discount. Hawaiian officials, especially Liane Komatsu and Bernie Salvador, worked tirelessly for two weeks to accommodate teams flying from all over the state to state championship tournaments in girls basketball and baseball on Oahu, tennis on Kauai and track and field on Maui.

But the load of more than 750 athletes, coaches and trainers plus the usual Friday exodus of people to different islands apparently was more than Hawaiian could handle. Four track teams arrived on Maui later than planned, and the flight carrying Waiakea High of Hilo touched down at the aiport in Kahului 20 minutes before the meet was to start. Obliging officials delayed the start of the meet a little more than 20 minutes so that Waiakea boys hurdler Bertram Sylva could have his chance to qualify. Sylva came to Satoki Yamamoto Track with the 26th and slowest qualifying time of 16.54 seconds. But, "He came running into the stadium so fast, he was almost hyperventillating," said Keith Amemiya, executive diredtor of Hawaii High School Athletic Association. Sylva improved his time nearly a half-second, to 16.02 seconds and 15th best, but did not qualify. The trials were proceeding at a pace that would see the last race start at 12:55 a.m. today.

Athletes were to return this afternoon for final field events at 2 p.m. and the first running event at 5:40. At the other end of the punctuality spectrum from Waiakea was Kahuku, whose principal gave the team permission to leave for Maui on Thursday. They even got to practice at War Memorial Stadium the day before the meet.

That angered some other public schools, who noted that schools superintendent Paul LeMahieu had ordered after the teachers' strike ended that no class time be lost for students to travel or participate in special events.

Kahuku officials said that after his strong public pronouncement, LeMahieu later privately notified principals they could use their discretion on early release. Kahuku did.

Waiakea athletic director Ken Yamase said no Waiakea athletes were being released early for any event.
