Wahine track team in 6th place at WAC championships

The University of Hawai'i Wahine are in sixth place at the Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Fresno, Calif.

UH has scored 16 points in three days, with Cheryl Smith accounting for 10 points with a first-place finish in the 10,000 meters. Her time of 35 minutes, 15.95 seconds beat the runner-up by 43 seconds.

Courtney Barlow placed seventh in the steeplechase, setting a UH record in 12:16.46, and Diosa Hussey finished eighth in the shot put with a personal best of 12.08 meters.

Junior Casey McGuire-Turcotte qualified for the finals in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:40.09 and 800 meters with a personal best of 2:13.27. She will compete in both races today.

Nevada leads the women's competition with 71 points, followed by Rice (56 1/2), Fresno State (51), Southern Methodist (30), Tulsa (19), Hawai'i, Texas Christian (15) and Texas-El Paso (13 1/2).

Texas-El Paso leads the men's field with 60 points.
