Eleven-year-old leads Jennie K. golf tournament

Punahou School sixth-grader Michelle Wie shot a 1-under-par 71 yesterday to take a one-stroke lead after the opening round of the Jennie K. Wilson Women's Invitational at the Mid-Pacific Country Club course.

Wie, 11, shot nines of 36 and 35 to lead the championship flight.

Ayumi Hori (72) is second overall and in the championship flight.

Kathy Tsukada (76) is third overall and leads A flight. Other flight leaders: Chayne Orscher (84) in B, Lynne Chow (87) in C and Bernice Hiraoka (89) in D.

The 54-hole tournament, considered one of the most prestigious for Hawai'i women golfers, continues today.


U.S. Kids Golf qualifying June 26

Hawai'i qualifying for the U.S. Kids Golf World Championships will be held June 26 at the Turtle Bay Golf Club course.

The tournament is open to boys and girls ages 12 and younger.

Turtle Bay is one of 53 courses in 50 states serving as state qualifying sites.

The world championships will be held Aug. 3-5 at Jekyll Island (Ga.) Golf Resort.


Aloha Games deadlines approaching

Registration deadlines are nearing for the Aloha State Games, which begin June 2 with a community fair and opening ceremonies at Kaka'ako Waterfront Park.

The deadline for the first events — bulls-eye and action pistols — is May 26. Registration deadline for each of the 48 sports is seven days prior to the start of the event.

Competition in 22 sports begins June 9 and 10.
