Pets studied in survey
By the Hawaiian Humane Society
"The State of the American Pet" is a report on the status and health of American cats and dogs based a telephone survey conducted by Yankelovich Partners for Ralston-Purina (www.purina.com to see the whole survey). Here are some highlights:
- Most pets reign alone in their castles (66 percent of cat owners have only one cat; 70 percent of dog owners have only one dog).
- Dogs tend to be purebred (61 percent of owners have a purebred dog); but cats tend to be of mixed breeds (only 14 percent have a purebred cat).
- The majority of pet owners have a pet under 7 years of age.
- Pet lovers treat their animal companions like people: 90 percent hug and pet their animals every day; 43 percent have celebrated their dog's birthday while 16 percent have taken their cat on vacation.
- Most folks turn to veterinarians for information about their pets, but younger people search the Internet more often while older folks turn to friends and books.
- Dog owners made 2.3 veterinarian visits a year; cat owners made an average of 1.6 visits a year.
- Nearly one-quarter of pet owners have not spayed or neutered their cat or dog.
- Almost half of pet owners got their cat from a family member, friend or neighbor while only 39 percent of dog owners got their pet in this way.
