Show an homage to botanical garden

By Virginia Wageman

 •  Aloha Ho'omaluhia XVII

Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden, Kane'ohe.

Through May 28.

233-7323.

Aloha Ho'omaluhia, an art show that celebrates the beauty of the Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden, has been held annually since 1984. For the show, artists create works inspired by the ecology of the garden, especially in relation to its proximity to H-3.

There are several outstanding works in this year's show, including three richly atmospheric paintings of the gardens by Ka-Ning Fong; metaphoric paintings of seed pods by Carl Jennings; and dark, narrative paintings by Russell Sunabe.

A beautifully crafted paper art "Secret Garden" by Marcia Morse suggests by layering and by its vistas that open onto an eye the multiple rewards possible from explorations of the garden/self.

The other artists are David Behlke, Debra Drexler, Raina Grigg, Jan Hathaway, Linda Hutchinson, Diana Jeon, Kloe Kang, Toni Martin and Diane Nushida-Tokuno.
