Advertiser Staff and News Services

The Visitor Industry Charity Walk raised $812,000 in its 23rd annual event, exceeding last year's total by $7,000.

More than 12,700 walkers on four islands participated to raise money for Hawai'i's charities. Walkers in Maui raised $238,000, $53,000 more than in 2000.

On O'ahu, walkers began at 6 a.m. at Ala Moana Beach Park and made a 7-mile trek through Waikiki, to Kapi'olani Park and back.

Themed "Pictures in Paradise," this year's walk included "Hawaii 5-0" star Jack Lord's personal car on display along the route.
