Theater complex opening to benefit Ready to Learn

Advertiser Staff

Theater openings have become almost an everyday event for the Islands, but the opening this week of Consolidated Theatre's Ward 16 complex will be a little different: It takes the form of a benefit party, "Moonlight & Movies," at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, with all proceeds from the $25 ticket price benefiting Ready to Learn.

 •  For tickets to Moonlight & Movies, or information about Ready to Learn, call the Ready to Learn office, 841-4593.
Ready to Learn is a joint project of Helping Hands Hawai'i and Sen. Daniel K. Inouye and Mrs. Maggie Inouye, designed to provide school supplies to needy children, grades K-12 throughout the Islands. Last year, the nonprofit effort brought supplies to 25,000 children grades K-12.

"Moonlight & Movies" includes a tour of the new Ward Entertainment Center at Auahi and Kamake'e Streets; live music by Colon at 6 p.m. and Kapena at 7 p.m.; pupu from Consolidated Theatres' concessions, Ryan's Grill, Compadres Bar & Grill, Brew Moon, Kaka'ako Kitchen, Kincaid's Fish, Chop & Steakhouse and Starbuck's Coffee; a silent auction benefiting Ready to Learn, and — of course — free movies, popcorn and sodas. Among the films: "Shrek" and "The Mummy Returns." Free parking and valet parking will be available for the event, which continues until 9 p.m.

The Ward 16 Theatre is the first tenant in the new Entertainment Center, which will include restaurants and other venues. The theater will be the only one in Hawai'i to offer fresh pizza baked on site.
