Police question suspect in three Maui sex assaults

Advertiser Staff

WAILUKU, Maui — Maui police yesterday were questioning a suspect in three sexual assaults over a nine-day period this month.

The 31-year-old Wailuku man was arrested Monday morning in an unrelated car theft, said Lt. Glenn Cuomo of the Maui Police Department. He had not been charged yesterday.

The sexual assaults were reported by women in Spreckelsville, Kahului and Wailuku. In all three cases, the assailant entered the homes through unlocked doors, Cuomo said.

In the most recent case, a woman in her 70s returned home Saturday morning to find an intruder. The man tied up the woman and raped her before fleeing. In the other two cases, the victims were fondled while they slept.
