HPU students reach final 16 in event

Hawai'i Pacific University students joined 153 other college teams May 13-15 in Kansas City, Mo., competing on how well they had taught others the principles of marketing, economics, business and entrepreneurship.

The seven-member team headed by Jason Kim reached the final 16, the farthest any Hawai'i college has gone in the national Students In Free Enterprise competition.

The other team members were Guilherme Albieri, Julie Blake, Caroline Ginnane, Benedikt Goetz, Saw Hong and Nga Nguyen.

Business leaders from some of the nation's top companies judged the educational outreach projects each team developed and implemented throughout the year.

The HPU team worked with 500 people on such projects as revamping a law office intra-network, teaching children about starting a business and consulting with Fiji officials about ecotourism.

Manco, a company that makes duct tape and other products, was so impressed with the Hawai'i team that it will work with members to develop a distributorship in the state, Kim said.
