Royal School has dedication

Royal School students and school personnel dedicated and named their new administration and library building yesterday in honor of the school's founder.

The ceremonies featured the Royal Hawaiian Band and the school's bell choir. Royal School students in kindergarten through grade five performed songs and dance.

The oldest school on O'ahu, Royal Elementary was founded in 1839 by King Kamehameha III to give Hawai'i's future leaders a Western-style education.

The new building cost about $3.8 million, compared to the $2,000 it took to build the first school back in Kamehameha III's time.
