Board urges water conservation

Advertiser Staff

O'ahu residents are being urged to conserve water because of a decline in the island's aquifers.

Honolulu Board of Water Supply deputy manager and chief engineer Donna Kiyosaki said water levels at three stations on O'ahu are at the "alert" stage, while major artesian well stations at Beretania, Halawa and Kaimuki are at the "caution" level.

Levels of concern are the "caution," "alert" and the most serious "critical" categories.

Kiyosaki said heavy winter rains are needed to recharge the aquifers, but for the past four years low rainfall has not enabled water levels to recover sufficiently.
