Our education stars make Hawai'i shine

For all the talk about the problems faced by Hawai'i's education system — strikes, money woes, lagging test scores — there's a lot of good happening out there.

And some of that good recently came in for national recognition.

First there was the achievement of ace student Nicholas Jachowski, an eighth-grader at Kalama Intermediate School in Makawao. Nicholas recently came in second in the national geography bee in Washington, D.C.

Then Education Secretary Rod Paige announced that two Hawai'i schools, Noelani Elementary and Holy Family Catholic Academy, were among just 264 schools nationwide to be named National Blue Ribbon Schools for excellence in education.

The common thread in the achievements of Nicholas and the two schools — the public Noelani and the private Holy Family — is hard work, innovation, cooperation and a sheer love of learning.

Congratulations to all. Hawai'i is proud.
