HAWAI'I MOTOR SPEEDWAY

• What: Memorial Weekend Double Points Challenge

• Site: Hawai'i Motor Speedway.

• Schedule: Gates open 5 p.m. today and tomorrow with racing at 7 p.m.

• Track: 1/4-mile, ultra-wide (85 feet wide), dirt track oval.

• Tickets: Today, adults can purchase a pass for both nights of racing for $12. Adults $7, seniors 55 and older and juniors 11-17 $5, children 6-10 $3 and children 5-younger free. Retired or active military personnel will receive a $1 discount.

• Information: Dirt-track hotline at 682-8226.

• Fast facts: Racing will feature winged sprint cars, mini stocks, super stocks, midgets, modifieds and cruzer bruzers.

• Last week: The winners were Dean Freitas (winged sprint cars), Ronald Ilae Sr. (modifieds), Terrie Andrade (mini modifieds), Stacy Hanson (super street stock), Brandon Ternora (mini stock) and Justin Baker (cruzer-bruzers).


HAWAI'I RACEWAY PARK

• What: Street car racing.

• Site: Hawai'i Raceway Park.

• Schedule: Today and tomorrow. Gates open 6 p.m. and racing begins at 7 p.m.

• Track: 1/4-mile drag strip.

• Tickets: Cost is $6, with children 7 and under free.

• Information: Dirt-track hotline at 682-8226.


INDY RACING LEAGUE

• What: Indianapolis 500

• Site: Indianapolis, Ind.

• Schedule: Sunday, ABC, 6 a.m.

• Track: Indianapolis Motor Speedway (rectangular oval, 2.5 miles, 9 degrees banking in turns).

• Race distance: 500 miles, 200 laps.

• Fast facts: The race has taken place every year since 1911, except for when the United States was in World War I (1917-18) and World War II (1942-45). ... Arie Luyendyk set the race record of 185.981 mph in 1990. ... John Andretti made history in 1994 by competing in the Indianapolis 500 and the NASCAR Coca-Cola 600, in Concord, N.C., on the same day. Stewart accomplished the feat in 1999 and will attempt to repeat it this year. ... Michael Andretti will be racing in his first Indy 500 since 1995.

• Last week: Scott Sharp won the pole for the Indianapolis 500 at 226.037 mph. Chip Ganassi qualified four drivers for the race: Indy rookies Bruno Junqueira and Nicolas Minassian, and Tony Stewart and Jimmy Vasser.

• Last year: Juan Montoya crossed over from the CART series and won easily. Montoya, who now races in Formula One, led 167 of the 200 laps and took the checkered flag with his closest competitor still in the fourth turn. He was Indy's first rookie champion since Graham Hill in 1966.

NASCAR

• What: Coca-Cola 600

• Site: Concord, N.C.

• Schedule: Sunday, Fox, 11 a.m.

• Track: Lowe's Motor Speedway (quad-oval shaped, 1.5 miles, 24 degrees banking in turns).

• Race distance: 600 miles, 400 laps.

• Fast facts: Jeff Gordon's first Winston Cup victory was the 1994 Coca-Cola 600. He has won seven poles at Lowe's, most among active drivers.

• Fast facts: Tony Stewart beat Ricky Rudd, Rusty Wallace and Jeff Gordon, taking the lead with 39 laps to go in the Pontiac Excitement 400 and driving to his first victory this year. ... Gordon won The Winston, NASCAR's All-Star event, in Concord.

• Next race: MBNA Platinum 400, June 3, Dover, Del.

FORMULA ONE

• What: Monaco Grand Prix

• Site: Monte Carlo

• Schedule: Sunday

• Track: Monte Carlo street circuit (2.068 miles).

• Race distance: 161.304 miles, 78 laps.

• Fast facts: Michael Schumacher has won four times in Monte Carlo. ... Juan Montoya, last year's Indy 500 winner, will be in Monaco and will not be defending his title.

• Last race: David Coulthard took advantage of a near-crash between Michael Schumacher and Juan Montoya to win the Austrian Grand Prix. Coulthard, driving a McLaren-Mercedes, got his second Formula One victory of the season to cut Schumacher's lead to four points in the standings.

• Next race: Canadian Grand Prix, June 10, Montreal.

• Site: West Allis, Wis.

• Schedule: June 3

• Last race: Kenny Brack, the 1999 Indianapolis 500 winner, took his first checkered flag in the cockpit of a Champ car, shaking off Helio Castroneves to win the Firestone Firehawk 500 in Motegi, Japan. Brack grabbed the lead on the 150th of 201 laps and fought off a late assault by the faster-qualifying Honda Reynards of Castroneves and Tony Kanaan.
