Plant classes for kids

By Zenaida Serrano Espanol

Lyon Arboretum will be offering a variety of classes as part of its fourth annual Summer Science for Kids program, encouraging keiki to discover the world of plants, animals and more.

Classes are available to children from kindergarten through grade 5. Held on various days throughout June, July and August, they offer wide-ranging experiences — hiking trips in Manoa Valley, an opportunity to design original ceramic tiles for the new Lyon Arboretum Children's Garden, a chance to sketch and paint their impressions of the garden, and more. In the Hawaiian Forest Plants and Animals class, for instance, students will spend five fun-filled days looking at native ecosystems and some invasive alien species. The Discover Plants class will be three days of hands-on adventures, and include planting take-home gardens and cooking in the classrooms.

Prices for each class are between $30 and $160. Pre-registration is required, and class sizes are limited. Call 988-0456 for more information or to register.
