Summer Grand Sumo Tournament
Takanohana tops Musashimaru

Advertiser Staff

In a show of true grit, yokozuna (grand champion) Takanohana, hurting in both knees, grabbed Musashimaru's belt and threw him down in a wrestle-off for the championship of the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament today in Tokyo.

Takanohana, who won his 22nd tournament title, left the arena limping with an injured right knee on Saturday. He wore a bandage on his knee today.

In the final regular match, yokozuna Musashimaru (Wai'anae's Fiamalu Penitani) charged and stepped to the side as Takanohana fell forward, leaving a scrape on his left knee. Both yokozuna finished the tournament 13-2.

Musashimaru was going after his ninth title.
