Advertiser Staff

Lifeguards — one at Fort DeRussy and another from Los Angeles — were winners yesterday in the second annual Waikiki Ocean Mile Swim.

John Flanagan, 25, won the men's race in waters fronting Duke's Waikiki. Flanagan, a Ft. DeRussy lifeguard, beat the field of nearly 250 in 13 minutes, 15 seconds. New Zealand's Glenn Anderson (13:34) and Steven Ferguson (13:37) were second and third, respectively.

Heidi Hannenian, a 30-year-old Los Angeles lifeguard, was the first woman finisher in 14:22. She finished two seconds ahead of Ashley Swart, a 16-year-old Kaiser High School student. New Zealand's Andrea Hewitt was third in 14:51.

The swim is part of the 12th Hawaiian Airlines World Ocean Games. The games continue with the Hawaiian International Ocean Challenge, a competition for lifeguards, from 12-4 p.m. Friday at Makapu'u Beach and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Kailua Beach Park.
