School honors deceased trio
Diplomas were posthumously awarded Saturday to three Mililani High School seniors who died in a traffic accident April 12.
The diplomas were given to relatives of Andrew Delos Reyes, Jeremy Tolentino and Anthony Alexander during the school's graduation ceremony.
"Today should have been their day as well," class adviser Stacie Kunihisa said.
Delos Reyes, Tolentino and Alexander were passengers in a car that crossed the center line on Kaukonahua Road and smashed into a guardrail before being struck by an oncoming car. The driver, fellow Mililani High student Brian Dade, survived the crash, along with three people in the second car.
Police opened a negligent homicide investigation into the crash.

Auahi water main repaired
Crews finished repairing a broken water main yesterday on Auahi Street that temporarily shut down the new Consolidated Theatres' Ward 16-screen complex.
The 12-inch pipe, which ruptured about noon Monday near Kamakee and Auahi streets, was repaired about 4:30 a.m. Tests will be done to determine what caused the cast-iron pipe to break.
The theater canceled several screenings Monday afternoon, including showings of "Pearl Harbor."
Recycling for a good cause
More than 16,000 students representing 45 schools collected more than 1.5 million aluminum cans in one month for the Department of Health's 2001 School Recycling Challenge.
The department joined with with TOMRA Recycling Network in 'Aiea to promote school collection programs as an effective way to simultaneously reduce waste, learn how to protect the environment and raise funds for extra-curricular programs.
In the large category, Moanalua Elementary won first place for collecting 133 cans per student. Pearl Ridge Elementary won first place in the medium category with 291 cans per student, and Waikiki School won first place in the small category for collecting 145 cans per student.
Second-place winners were Mililani Mauka Elementary, Ka'ala Elementary and Ka'ele'pulu Elementary. Third-place winners were Mililani Uka Elementary, Lincoln Elementary and Palisades Elementary. Manoa Elementary was an honorable mention. Top performers in Maui County and Kaua'i County included Wailuku Elementary, Kilauea School and St. Theresa School.
Winners on the Big Island included Honaunau School, Ho'o'kena School and Waiakea Elementary School.
Four students win writing contest
Four Hawai'i students have been honored for their winning entries on "Why I Am Glad America is a Nation of Immigrants."
Amanda Tabata of Maryknoll School won first place, with her entry also placing as one of four runners-up in the National Creative Writing Contest.
Brian Saxton, also of Maryknoll School, placed second in the state competition; and Tyler Brown of St. Ann's School and Nicole Ing of Hawai'i Baptist Academy tied for third.
They received cash prizes of $100, $50 and $25. The winning entries were selected from 100 entries submitted by fifth-grade students across Hawai'i.
The "Celebrate America" creative writing contest was sponsored by the American Immigration Law Foundation and the Hawai'i Chapter of American Immigration Lawyers Association.

Wai'anae man hurt in wreck
A 21-year-old Wai'anae man remained in critical condition yesterday at the Queen's Medical Center after an early morning accident on Farrington Highway. According to police, the man was driving a blue 1995 Toyota Cressida Ho-nolulu-bound near Keawa'aula Bay about 4:10 a.m. yesterday when he swerved off the road and hit a utility pole on the mauka side, causing the vehicle to flip.
The victim was airlifted to the hospital. The highway was closed in both directions while police investigated the accident.
Volunteers clean beach
Volunteers from the Pine Tree 'Ohana Surf Club worked over the weekend to collect and remove 50 garbage bags of litter and trash from roads and beaches at Kalaeloa.
Pine Tree 'Ohana, which has more than 100 members, organizes beach cleanups and other public service events in the area.
First Hawaiian Bank, Meadow Gold Dairies, the Cookie Corner, Turbo Surf and Consolidated Theatres helped sponsor the event.
