Space programs offered for youth on Big Island

HILO, Hawai'i — University of Hawai'i-Manoa's Hawai'i Space Grant College is offering three Big Island programs for aspiring astronauts this summer.

The theme of the programs is "Apollo: The Next Generation, Return to the Moon."

A five-day exploration session scheduled June 18-22 for students in grades 3-6 will focus on robotics, rocketry, geology, biospheres and the scientific method.

The program will be conducted at the University of Hawai'i-Hilo. Participants must make their own arrangements for housing.

A second program scheduled July 8-13 will offer students in grades 4-7 accommodations at Kilauea Military Camp at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, where a simulated space mission will be staged on a lava field.

A family program will be held July 13-15 at the military camp.
