Iowa State lands state wrestling champion

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Iowa State wrestling coach Bobby Douglas has gone halfway across the Pacific for his newest recruit.

Grant Nakamura, a state champion in Hawai'i, said he will walk on at Iowa State. Nakamura wrestled at Maui's Baldwin High School, where he was 31-1 as a senior and 102-12 in his career.

He won the state title at 125 pounds this year and twice was a state runner-up.

Baldwin coach Mike Donahoo said it was a big deal for a wrestler from Hawai'i to go to a program like Iowa State's.

"For us, that's like someone going to Duke or going to Nebraska to play football," Donahoo said. "In terms of wrestling, it's the biggest thing ever to come out of Hawai'i."

Nakamura said he wasn't familiar with Iowa State other than knowing the wrestling program was strong.

"I know they are usually in the top five and they have (three-time NCAA champion) Cael Sanderson," he said. "He makes the newspapers all the way down here."
