Jean Tsai, occupational therapist, dead at 66

Jean Yuriko Tsai, mother of Honolulu Advertiser sports writers Stephen and Michael Tsai, died May 26 in Honolulu. She was 66.

Jean Tsai was born in Honolulu and graduated from Kaimuki High School. She earned a degree in occupational therapy from Washington University in St. Louis, Mo.

Tsai moved to New York, where she met her husband, James. While in New York, the couple had three children.

She served as director of occupational therapy for the Jewish Institute for Geriatric Care. She moved her family to Hawai'i in 1973 after her husband died.

Tsai worked for several nursing homes in Honolulu. She also served as a trainer and did clerical work at the Lanakila Rehabilitation Center.

In addition to her sons, she is survived by her daughter, Stephanie Burch; father, Shinichi "Charles" Kubo; brothers, Richard, James and Francis Kubo; and five grandchildren.

Memorial services over the ashes will be held Tuesday at Hawaiian Memorial Park Mortuary. Visitation will begin at 6:30 p.m., with a service at 7 p.m.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hawaiian Memorial Park. Aloha attire is requested.
