Hawai'i Pacific's magic number is 1 (win)

By Michael Tsai
Advertiser Staff Writer

With one week left in the Pacific West Conference regular season, Hawai'i's four NCAA Division II volleyball programs are keeping close tabs on some important numbers.

1 — The number of matches defending national champion Hawai'i Pacific needs to win to clinch the conference championship and automatic berth to the six-team NCAA II Pacific Regionals. The Lady Sea Warriors have two matches left: Montana State-Billings Saturday and Western New Mexico Monday.

2 — Games by which Brigham Young-Hawai'i trails HPU. For BYUH to win the conference title, HPU must lose both remaining matches and BYUH must beat Western New Mexico tomorrow and Montana State-Billings Tuesday.

4 — Matches lost by HPU in its last six outings, including a non-conference loss to Division I Hawai'i Tuesday.

0 — Matches lost by the Lady Sea Warriors during last season's championship run.

13 — HPU's ranking in the latest AVCA Division II Top 25 Poll.

44 — Consecutive AVCA polls (dating back to Sept. 22, 1998) in which HPU had been ranked in the top 10 prior to this week.

6 — Consecutive matches Western New Mexico has won heading into its Hawai'i visit this weekend.

4 — Double-doubles (kills and digs) that Western New Mexico freshman and former St. Francis standout Kimberly Tano recorded last week en route to PacWest Player of the Week honors. The Kane'ohe native is averaging 2.93 kills per game.

500 — Career wins for UH-Hilo coach Sharon Peterson following the Vulcans' dramatic five-game win over Chaminade Sunday. Peterson, a five-time national coach of the year, is the first Hawai'i Division II coach to reach the mark. The Vulcans have rebounded from a rocky start to win six of their last eight matches with five matches remaining.

The party starts at 5 p.m. and includes a no-host mock cocktail bar and food. Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for students and $3 for children age 12 and under. The cost includes a ticket for the match. Fans with a Vulcan season pass will receive a free drink.

The Vulcans are also having an Aloha Friday promotion for the match. Anyone wearing aloha attire will be admitted to the match for free.
