Wahine golfers finish 18th

The University of Hawai'i women's golf team finished 18th among 19 schools at the Rainbow Wahine Fall Golf Classic yesterday.

The Wahine closed the 54-hole tournament with its best round of 311 for a 970 total at the Kapolei Golf Course.

"We didn't play well yesterday; we were all disappointed at the scores (331 and 328)," said UH coach Marga Stubblefield. "But today they came back and scored better."

Senior Melanie Matsumura shot her second consecutive 5-over-par 77 to finish in a tie for 32nd with 233.

New Mexico shot a final-round 288 to finish at 884, the second-lowest score in tournament history. Arizona (905) placed second and California (911) third.

"We really feel honored to win this tournament," said New Mexico coach Jackie Booth. "There were a lot of really good teams here."

Lorena Ochoa of Arizona shot a 3-under-par 69 yesterday to clinch medallist honors with a 218 total. Two strokes behind were New Mexico's Kailin Downs (69) and Central Florida's Federica Piovano (72).
