Lighthouse chroniclers to sign books

By Chris Oliver
Advertiser Staff Writer

In 1987, Bob and Sandra Shanklin embarked on a journey to photograph every lighthouse in the United States.

Known as "the lighthouse people," the Shanklins' mission took them on windy trails, slogging through sand dunes, down flooded trails, on ferries, lobster boats, twin-engined planes and Coast Guard helicopters. By 1999 they had photographed every standing lighthouse in America.

"Lighthouses of the Hawaiian Islands," The Lighthouse People, $10.95, presents nine historic lighthouses located on O'ahu, Kaua'i, Moloka'i, Maui and the Big Island.

The photographs, both land and aerial of the lighthouses, and insets of local floral and fauna are accompanied by a short history of each lighthouse. The Shanklins will sign copies of their book today from noon to 1p.m. at Border's Books & Music, Waikele, and at 4 to 5 p.m. at Border's Books & Music, Ward Centre.
