North Shore surfers feel right at home in Xcel Pro

North Shore surfers Tamayo Perry, Rainos Hayes and Jamie Sterling were among the standouts advancing to the third round of the Xcel Pro yesterday.

The entire first round and half of the second round were completed in 4- to 6-foot waves at Sunset Beach.

Jonah Morgan of the Big Island was the only surfer to win both his first and second round heats. Jason Magallanes of O'ahu's North Shore scored the wave of the day, a 9.5 for a clean barrel ride in his first-round heat.

Australian Layne Beachley, the only female in the field, advanced through the first round, but was eliminated in the second round.

The top-seeded surfers, including defending world champion Sunny Garcia and defending Xcel Pro champ Pancho Sullivan, received byes yesterday.

The contest will continue today at Sunset Beach, conditions permitting. For status of the event, call 596-7873.


COLLEGE

• Sports after high school: The Manoa Public Library will sponsor "Preparing for College Athletics," a two-part program for current high school athletes interested in participating in collegiate athletics, especially soccer.

Phil Neddo, director of the Honolulu Bulls soccer club, will host the event at the Manoa Public Library on Nov. 5 and 19, from 6 to 7:45 p.m.

The programs will focus on the procedures, guidelines, recruitment and financial aid information needed to participate in all levels of collegiate athletics from Division I to junior college.

LACROSSE

• Tournament at Kapi'olani: The Hawai'i Lacrosse Invitational will be held today and tomorrow at Kapi'olani Park starting at 9 a.m. each day.

There will be 19 teams participating in the men's and women's divisions, including teams from Hawai'i, the Mainland, Canada, Japan and Korea.


SOCCER

• Wahine take on Fresno State: The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team will play its final regular-season match today at 4 p.m. against Fresno State at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

It will be the final home match for Wahine seniors Veronica Flores, Carmel Hurley, Erin Schremser and Jennifer Starsiak.

Hawai'i's Arlene Devitt and Tiffany Makue will not be eligible to play because of cards they received in a match against San Jose State on Thursday.


VOLLEYBALL

• BYUH sweeps: Xu Dan and Ashley Moeai had 14 kills apiece as Brigham Young-Hawai'i defeated Western New Mexico, 30-17, 30-22, 30-18, in a Pacific West Conference match last night at the Cannon Activities Center.

Western New Mexico's Kimberly Tano, a St. Francis High graduate, had nine kills.

BYUH is 13-6 overall and 9-5 in the PacWest. Western New Mexico falls to 16-14 and 6-6.

• UHH wins in 5: Sara Pilgreen had 30 kills and Emily Hutchinson added 18 kills as Hawai'i-Hilo defeated Montana State-Billings, 30-23, 26-30, 24-30, 30-27, 16-14, last night at UHH Gym.

UHH improved to 14-13 overall and 5-8 in the PacWest. Montana State-Billings is 15-12 and 5-7.


UH FOOTBALL

• New bus route: TheBus football express has added a new route from Mililani to Aloha Stadium for the University of Hawai'i and San Jose State football game today.

Buses will leave Mililani Park near Makaikai street at 3:15 p.m., 4 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. for the 6:05 p.m. start of the game.

TheBus provides service between 16 other stops around the island. Fare is $3 each way. Passes and transfers are not accepted.
