HONOLULU

Tour bus hits, kills Honolulu woman

A 67-year-old Honolulu woman was hit by a tour bus yesterday morning as she was crossing a street near the Kmart in Iwilei.

She died yesterday afternoon at The Queen's Medical Center.

The woman was crossing Iwilei Road behind Kmart, walking outside the crosswalk, at about 9:45 a.m., police said.

The bus was making a right turn off Sumner Street onto Iwilei Road, when it struck her.

The driver was a 50-year-old Honolulu man, driving a 1996 MCI bus, police said.

The woman was taken by ambulance to Queens in critical condition, but died a few hours later, a nursing supervisor said.

Dental group donating money

The Hawaii Dental Service announced yesterday that it is donating $500,000 to five Hawai'i community agencies.

The gift includes $100,000 each to the Hawaii Foodbank, The Institute for Human Services, the Queen's Dental Clinic, Catholic Social Ministries and United Ways in Hawai'i.

"We know it's been a tough year for many of these agencies, and it will get even tougher in the next few months," said HDS board chairman Jay Kanegawa.

Bikers round up books for kids

Hundreds of motorcycle riders from clubs affiliated with Street Bikers United are collecting children's books for Hawai'i's needy children.

The bikers will drop the new and gently used books off at The Honolulu Advertiser parking lot on South Street today from 11 a.m. to noon.

The book drive launches National Book Week and Family Literacy Month and benefits the Family Literacy Program in Hawai'i.

The Department of Education's Family Literacy Program provides adult education, family-child activities and parent education to about 150 of the state's low-income families and to their schools.

The bikers, whose clubs are affiliated with Street Bikers United, have been donating toys and school supplies to the state's needy children for many years. This is the first year they have donated books.

NORTH SHORE

Benefit targets Weed Circle

The North Shore Outdoor Circle and Hale'iwa Main Street organizations want to rally the community to raise the rest of the money needed to landscape Weed Circle, at the Hale'iwa-Waialua junction.

The organizations have raised $20,000 but need another $20,000 to finish the project, which includes the planting of wiliwili, hala and royal poinciana trees.

A garden tour fund-raiser with picnic, fashion show and silent auction is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Nov. 17 in gardens in upper Pupukea and ending at the Pietsch Estate, where lunch will be served. The tour includes a Buddhist retreat center and a hydroponic facility. Reservations must be made by Wednesday; call Dorothy at 638-5178.

The Ho'onani Weed Circle event will cost $50, of which $30 will be tax-deductible.

The beautification of Weed Circle, considered the gateway to the North Shore, is the first step to enhancing Hale'iwa and making it a pedestrian-friendly place, said Antya Miller, president of Hale'iwa Main Street.

The state has promised water and maintenance, and the city will plant the trees once an irrigation system is installed. Volunteers will install the rest of the shrubs and ground cover, she said.
