Man arrested after attempted robbery

KAILUA, Kona, Hawai'i — Kona police yesterday arrested a man suspected of trying to rob the Lanihau Branch of the First Hawaiian Bank.

The 25-year-old man was arrested on one count of attempted robbery and two counts of terroristic threatening. Police found him running from the bank, moments after an 11:22 a.m. alarm for a robbery in progress.

He is suspected of entering the bank, brandishing a dagger, jumping onto the customer service counter and demanding money from the tellers. The tellers did not turn over the money. The man is then suspected of running from the bank and to the street, where police confronted him.

He was being held last night in the Kona cellblock while Kona Criminal Investigation Section detectives investigate.
