HPU's Christensen, Madsen run away at regionals

Hawai'i Pacific's Nina Christensen and Christian Madsen won their respective divisions at the NCAA Division II Cross Country West Regionals yesterday at Bellingham, Wash.

Christensen won the women's 6-kilometer race in 21 minutes, 37 seconds. The sophomore from Denmark beat a field of 135 to qualify for the nationals, Nov. 17 at Slippery Rock, Pa.

Teammates Lisa Blomme (second in 21:57) and Sayuri Kusutani (third in 22:02) also qualified for the nationals.

Madsen won the men's 10-kilometer race in 32:07. The junior from Denmark beat a field of 122 to also qualify for the nationals.


VOLLEYBALL

• HPU clinches title: Andrea Wean had 22 kills, Roberta Robert 19 and Teisa Fotu 17 as Hawai'i Pacific clinched its third consecutive Pacific West Conference title with a 30-24, 27-30, 30-26, 30-24 victory over Montana State-Billings last night at St. Andrew's Priory gym.

Nia Tuitele added 59 assists and 13 digs for the Sea Warriors, who improved to 17-4 overall and 11-3 in the PacWest.

Angie Hopes had 22 kills for Montana State-Billings (15-13, 5-8).

In another PacWest match, Valasi Sepulona had 12 kills and 15 digs as Chaminade swept Western New Mexico, 33-31, 30-14, 30-18.

Chaminade is 7-14 and 4-8. Western New Mexico is 16-15, 6-7.


SURFING

• Garcia advances: Defending world champion Sunny Garcia advanced to the fourth round of the Xcel Pro yesterday in 4- to 8-foot waves at Sunset Beach.

Garcia, who is currently ranked No. 5 in the world, was one of several Hawai'i standouts yesterday.

Other third-round heat winners from Hawai'i included Bruce Irons, Larry Rios, Myles Padaca, Kaipo Jaquias, Jason Bogle, Brian Pacheco and Roy Powers.

Among the upsets, former world champion Derek Ho was eliminated in the third round along with Ross Williams, Kai Henry and Fred Patacchia Jr.

• Hawai'i juniors advance: Kekoa Bacalso of Mililani and Dustin Barca of Kaua'i won their first-round heats in the Billabong World Junior Championships yesterday in 3- to 4-foot waves at Phillip Island, Australia.

Bacalso and Barca advance directly to the third round.


WATER POLO

• Chaminade wins: Eric Billington scored three goals as Chaminade defeated Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 9-8, in double overtime Friday night at the Punahou School pool.

Chaminade is hoping to receive a berth in the Western Championships, Nov. 16-18.

Mike Rieben and Derek Anderson scored two goals apiece for BYUH, which finished 11-12.
