Maui moped drives dies
A 20-year-old Kihei man was killed yesterday when the moped he was driving was struck by a car near the Wailea Renaissance Resort.
Daniel T. Terwin was pronounced dead at about 8 last night at Maui Memorial Medical Center.
Terwin had been traveling south on Wailea Alanui Drive at 3:46 p.m. when a rented Oldsmobile van pulled out of the resort driveway and struck the Derbi moped he was on.
The van was driven by Jeong Hee Kang, 48, a tourist visiting from Illinois.
Terwin was not wearing a helmet.
Car fire burns Maui sugar field
A vehicle set ablaze in a Ma'alaea, Maui, cane field destroyed about 20 acres of sugarcane today before firefighters and the sugar company extinguished it.
A Kahului engine company responded first to the 1:13 a.m. alarm. Further assists came from its tanker and another engine company from Wailuku before firefighters had the blaze under control at 3 a.m.
Hawaii Commercial & Sugar Co., which owns the field, used its own tankers and rakes to completely extinguish the fire.
The fire apparently resulted when a stolen vehicle was set on fire in the canefield, located adjacent to the Ma'alaea power plant, fire spokesmen said. The car was identified as a yellow Ford Mustang of undetermined year.
Losses of the sugar crop were estimated at $120,000.
Police search for shoe store robber
Police are seeking a man in his early 30s who fled the Waipahu Town Center yesterday after robbing the Payless ShoeSource store and striking one of its employees.
Employees were preparing to close the shoe store just before 5 p.m. when the suspect entered and demanded money. According to police, the man became impatient and struck one employee with a metal pole. The employee handed the suspect an undetermined amount of cash.
The suspect, who ran away, was described as 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-10, weighing 160 pounds. He reportedly had a medium build and dark wavy hair, and was wearing a dark-colored T-shirt and jeans.
Tourist swimmer rescued off Maui
Maui fire and Coast Guard workers yesterday rescued a male tourist who had been swimming about a mile off the shoreline.
Just after 4:30 p.m., Lahaina firefighters answered a distress call, dispatching a ladder company to the Ukumehame area, about 14 miles south of Lahaina.
A fire department helicopter and a Coast Guard vessel assisted in rescuing the man, whose age and name were not released. He was treated at the scene and released.
Kona man charged after bank robbery
A 25-year-old Kona man was charged yesterday with attempted robbery after an aborted attempt to hold up the Kona branch of First Hawaiian Bank on Saturday.
Sheridan Kuhl entered the branch, located at the Lanihau Shopping Center, shortly before 2 p.m. Saturday, brandishing a dagger.
According to police reports, he jumped onto the customer counter and demanded money but ran without taking anything. Police were called, and he was arrested shortly after he fled. Kuhl was charged with first-degree attempted robbery and is being held in police cellblock in lieu of $70,000 bail.
