Ford Island groundbreaking

Advertiser Staff

Jim Williams, U.S. Navy Region Hawai'i
Rear Admiral Robert T. Conway Jr., presides over a groundbreaking on a $18.9 million Navy Lodge facility at historic Building 78 on Ford Island. Building 78 was constructed in 1941 and used as bachelor officers' quarters until 1984.

On Dec. 7, 1941, the building was used as an emergency medical treatment center. The building, which is part of the Pearl Harbor National Historic Landmark, was featured in the 1970 film "Tora! Tora! Tora!"

With construction of the new Navy Lodge, Building 78's interior and exterior architecture will be restored to its 1940s' era decor.
