Top volleyball seeds in state are unbeaten

League champions Kamehameha, Pearl City, Kealakehe and Maui are the top seeds of their pools for the Nissan Boys State Volleyball Championships, which start Thursday at McKinley and Kamehameha gyms.

Pool play runs from 1 p.m. Thursday with top two teams from each pool advancing to elimination brackets Friday at the Blaisdell Arena. Semifinals are set for 2 p.m. and 3:30 Saturday, with the third-place match scheduled for 5:30 and the championship for 8.

In Pool A with Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Kamehameha (15-0) are Big Island runner-up Waiakea (16-2) and O'ahu Interscholastic Association third-place finisher Kalaheo (10-2).

Leading Pool B is OIA champion Pearl City (13-0), which is joined by Maui runner-up Seabury Hall (12-3) and Big Island third-place team Hilo (14-3).

Pool C is led by Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion Kealakehe (14-0), followed by ILH runner-up Iolani (12-4) and OIA fourth-place finisher Farrington (9-3).

Pool D has two league champions, but the top seed is Maui Interscholastic League champion Maui (4-0), followed by Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation champion Waimea (5-3) and OIA runner-up Moanalua (10-3).

Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students for each site.

SURFING

• Barca advances: Dustin Barca of Kaua'i advanced to the fourth round of the Billabong World Junior Championship yesterday in 2- to 3-foot waves at Phillip Island, Victoria, Australia.

Barca defeated Australian Shaun Cansdell in the third round.

Three others from Hawai'i were eliminated yesterday: Joel Centeio in the third round, and Daniel Jones and Jordy Brough in the second round.

The field was limited to 48 of the top surfers from around the world age 21 and younger.

• Xcel postponed: Competition in the Xcel Pro was postponed yesterday because of small surf at Sunset Beach.

Contest officials have until Nov. 11 to run the last day of competition. Most of Hawai'i's top surfers remain in contention, including defending world champion Sunny Garcia.

MEETING

• QB Club: University of Hawai'i football receivers coach Ron Lee will be a guest speaker at today's weekly meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club at the Pagoda International Ballroom.

Also speaking are defensive backs coach Rich Miano and sportscaster Bobby Curran.

Lunch starts at 11:30 a.m. and the program at noon.
