Call it the Bear and the Big Blue Heist.

On Sunday, thieves broke into cars at the Park Shore Hotel at 2586 Kalakaua Ave. in Waikiki and stole numerous items, including the hand-and-rod puppets used in the live production of "Bear in the Big Blue House" being performed at the Hawaii Theater this month.

The owners of the three puppets, valued at $12,000, made a plea for their return today.

Stolen were two purple otter puppets named Pip and Pop, and a blue mouse named Tutter, officials said.

Though the character of Tutter plays a key role in the production, the thefts have not stopped the show because extra puppets were scheduled to be flown into Honolulu.

The show is scheduled for Thursdays through Sundays until Nov. 11, according to the Hawaii Theater Center Web page.

The owners want the puppets returned with no questions asked, according to press and promotions coordinator Elissa Josephsohn.

"Bear in the Big Blue House Live" is a 70-minute, multimillion-dollar theatrical production starring characters from the popular children's television show on the Disney Channel.

The show features shaggy puppets created by Jim Henson Productions, known for creating the Muppets.

The show stars a lovable, cha-cha-cha dancing bear and his friends. They include Tutter, his little blue mouse friend with a big heart; Ojo, the lovable little girl bear; Pip and Pop, the rambunctious purple otters; and Treelo, the affectionate green and blue lemur.

Anyone with information on the heist can call Crime Stoppers at 955-8300.
