The city announced today it is launching a "Sunset on the Beach" event at Queen's Surf Beach every Saturday and Sunday evening in an effort to draw more people to Waikiki.
From 4 to 9:30 p.m., residents and visitors will be treated to free local entertainment and movies shown on a 30-foot screen. Food from Honolulu restaurants will be available for purchase. Tables will be set up on the Kapahulu groin and on the sand, leaving Kalakaua Avenue open to traffic.
The first films will be Disney releases that were partially filmed in Hawai'i: "George of the Jungle" on Saturday and "Dinosaur" on Sunday.
The event expands this year's launch of the monthly "Brunch on the Beach" event, which has drawn thousands into Waikiki.
