NORTH SHORE

Group revives book fair

By popular demand, the North Shore Christmas Book Fair has become an annual event.

"We did it in 1999," said Alice Stanley, board member of Friends of Waialua Library, which is sponsoring the event. "Then we skipped a year. But people have been asking about it because they enjoyed getting books at such a discount."

The fair will return from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Waialua Library.

Stanley said the Christmas fair will feature new books from Booklines about hiking, cooking, fishing and Hawai'i beaches — all at 20 percent off.

The fair will also include discount CDs and Christmas gifts.

Money from the fair will buy new library books, said Stanley.

Retired colonel to speak at tribute

Retired U.S. Army Col. Young Oak Kim, one of the most decorated Asian American soldiers of World War II, will be the featured speaker at a tribute to Korean War veterans tonight at Washington Place.

The ceremonies honor the Centennial Committee of Korean Immigration to the United States and the Korean American Coalition.

About 200 people are expected to attend the tribute, which is by invitation only.

The celebration is intended to honor the approximately 7,000 Korean immigrants who arrived between1903 and 1905.

Ehime Maru dives will continue

The Navy yesterday said it has no immediate plans to end the search for the ninth Ehime Maru crew member. The Navy said it will evaluate the diving operation at midweek. Diving operations started on Oct. 15 and originally were scheduled to last 33 days, but delays have changed schedules.

"There is no deadline," said Navy spokeswoman Lt. Anne Cossitt. "The Navy is not going to search indefinitely, but we'll continue to search until we've searched the entire vessel."

The divers have recovered the remains of eight of the nine crewmen, teachers and students killed when the fisheries training vessel was rammed and sunk by the Navy submarine USS Greeneville on Feb. 9.
