Waialua surfer advances in World meet

Sean Moody of Waialua defeated 2000 world junior champion Pedro Henrique of Brazil in the fourth round of the Billabong World Junior Championship yesterday.

The third and fourth rounds were completed yesterday in 3- to 4-foot waves at Phillip Island, Victoria, Australia.

Moody beat Australian Jason Duffy in the third round, then edged Henrique, 22.9-21.35. Moody, 18, is the only Hawai'i surfer remaining in the competition. He will face Australian Mick Fanning, the No. 2 seed in the field, in the quarterfinals.

Dustin Barca of Kaua'i was eliminated in the fourth round by Brazil's Bruno Santos. Kekoa Bacalso of Mililani was eliminated in the third round by Australian Dane Johnson.

Xcel postponed: The Xcel Pro was postponed for the second consecutive day yesterday due to small surf at Sunset Beach. Contest officials have until Sunday to complete the final day of competition.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL

Final AVP standings: Hawai'i's Stein Metzger finished fifth and Kevin Wong seventh in the final Association of Volleyball Professionals Pro Beach Volleyball Tour points standings for domestic tournaments.

Dax Holdren of Santa Barbara, Calif., finished first.

Danalee Bragado of Honolulu was the highest Hawai'i finisher in the women's standings, tied for No. 17. Holly McPeak, of Manhattan Beach, Calif., finished first.

Wong was the top money earner on the domestic tour with $45,800. Metzger was third with $35,800.

The world tour finishes Nov. 27-Dec. 2 in Vitoria, Brazil.

Wong is the top male in world earnings with $101,050.
