In the last Western Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament, the University of Hawai'i Wahine outlasted Brigham Young in the championship, 15-12, 21-19, 13-15, 16-18, 24-22. At 3 hours and 38 minutes, it was the longest match in NCAA history.
Three years later, the conference has recovered sufficiently to try it again.
Half the teams bolted to create the Mountain West Conference in 1999. The other half decided a tournament was no longer necessary. But this season the WAC is up to 10 teams and the tournament is returning.
It will be played Nov. 15-18 at San Jose State's Event Center. Tickets can be purchased at the San Jose State Athletic Ticket Office or by calling (408) 924-SJTX (7589). Prices are $30 for adults and $15 for students for an all-session pass (nine matches). All seats are reserved.
WAC volleyball fans can also obtain a room rate at the San Jose Hilton & Towers by calling 1-408-287-2100, and requesting the group rate for the "WAC Volleyball Tournament." Rooms are limited.
