Dobelle to talk about community

University of Hawai'i President Evan Dobelle will deliver an address on the connections between universities and communities today, 4:30 p.m. at the School of Architecture auditorium, UH-Manoa.

Dobelle will focus on his experience as president of Trinity College and that college's relationship with the community of Hartford, Connecticut.

Following the president's address, a panel of planning professionals from private firms, the City & County of Honolulu, the state and the University of Hawai'i will discuss the ideas presented and how they might be applied to the Manoa campus and surrounding community.

The program is part of the university's strategic planning process, and is free and open to the public. For more information, call 956-6145.


Waimalu to honor Hickam volunteers

Students and staff from Waimalu Elementary School are holding a "School Partnership Appreciation Rally" today to recognize Air Force members who volunteer at the school.

Members of the 324th Intelligence Squadron and Pacific Air Forces Commander's Support Staff, based at Hickam Air Force Base, volunteer at Waimalu as part of the Hickam School Partnership program.

Seventeen Hickam units are partnered with 13 schools as part of the program. Three new schools were added this year.

More than 300 Hickam members volunteer at O'ahu schools, and expect to contribute more than 3,000 hours of work this year.

Additionally, through the Joint Venture Education Forum, the military awarded $5 million for repair and maintenance of Hawai'i schools.


Saint Francis to hold open house

Saint Francis School is holding an open house for prospective students and their parents at 9 a.m. Saturday on the Manoa campus, 2707 Pamoa Road.

Saint Francis, a Catholic girls' school, offers a baccalaureate, college-preparatory and career-preparatory program to students in grades 6-12. For details, call 988-4111, ext. 112.


UH homecoming bash tomorrow

The Associated Students of the University of Hawai'i-Manoa will present Homecoming Bash 2001 tomorrow from 5:30-10 p.m. at Andrews Amphitheater on campus.

The free event, including live entertainment and a pep rally featuring the UH football team and coach June Jones, is open to students, faculty, alumni and members of the community.
