Man opens door to 2 armed robbers

A 68-year-old Pensacola Street man was robbed early today when he opened his apartment door to find two armed intruders who tied him up and stole his wallet and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Shortly before 3:30 a.m. at the 1564 Pensacola St. apartment, the victim heard a knock at the door. When he opened it, the men entered, bound him and searched the apartment. The victim's roommate, who had been gone only briefly, returned to find the victim tied up.

The man, who is Vietnamese and spoke to police through an interpreter, said the assailants were both about 5-foot-3, weighed 180 pounds and wore dark shirts and pants.

A 31-year-old furloughed inmate was arrested last night as an escapee from the Women's Community Correctional Center because she had failed to return to her work-release program for more than a month.

The woman had been assigned to Matlock Hale, a Makiki halfway house operated by T.J. Mahoney and Associates at 1326 Matlock Ave. She was reported missing from the program Oct. 5.

She was arrested after being stopped at Vineyard Boulevard and 'A'ala Street at 9:45 p.m. for a traffic violation.
