Celebrating Kalakaua
The Friends of 'Iolani Palace's annual commemoration of King David Kalakaua's birthday takes place Nov. 16 at the palace. The Royal Hawaiian Band performs at 11:30 a.m.; review of the Royal Guard begins at 11:50 a.m.; a program of hula begins at 1 p.m. It's free; the public is invited to bring mats and beach chairs. 522-0832.
DANCE: Nov. 16-18

The "Annual Dance Concert: Bigger Than Life!" by the University of Hawai'i-Manoa's Department of Theatre and Dance, takes the Kennedy Theatre's mainstage for one weekend only. It's a multimedia event featuring pieces by UH faculty that blend computer/video technology and dance. 8 p.m. Nov. 16-17, 2 p.m. Nov. 18. $12 general, $9 seniors, military, faculty and staff, $7 non-UH students and children, $4 UHM students with valid ID. 956-7655.

JAZZ AND ART: Nov. 18

The sweet sounds of jazz will combine with the fine arts at La Pietra-Hawaii School for Girls Nov. 18. Shari Lynn and Jimmy Borges, accompanied by Fascinatin' Rhythm, and special guest Gabe Baltazar on sax will provide the music. Tagami and Powell Fine Art Gallery provides paintings, wood-turned bowls, glass art and other gifts for perusal and purchase. Comic Pauly Shore whose "Totally Pauly" show was a staple on MTV for four years, is coming for a standup show at World Cafe. The Local Divas present "This One's for You, Loyal," a holiday concert at the Hawaii Ballroom of the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel. The Divas are Carole Kai, Melveen Leed, Nohelani Cypriano and Loyal Garner, who has been battling cancer. Bayanihan, the National Folk Dance Company of the Philippines, which is touring the United States, will give its finale concert at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. The troupe has packed houses in San Francisco, Sacramento, Los Angeles, Malibu, Phoenix and Tucson; other destinations will include Ohio, New York, Washington, D.C., and Florida. 7:30 p.m. Nov. 30. $30 balcony seats, $40 orchestra ($5 discounts for seniors 65 and older and children 4-12); available at the box office. 591-2211, 526-4400.

CITY LIGHTS: Dec. 1-Jan. 1

There's no better way to get into the holiday spirit than to tour the annual Honolulu City Lights display, which encircles much of the downtown Capitol District. It all begins Dec. 1 at Honolulu Hale (City Hall) with children's entertainment from 4 p.m. on the municipal lawn; opening-night ceremony at 6 p.m.; Electric Light Parade, 6:25 p.m. in front of Honolulu Hale; Christmas tree lighting, 6:30 p.m.; concert, 7:30 p.m.; and the arrival of Santa, 7:30 p.m. Indoor Christmas tree and wreath exhibits inside Honolulu Hale will be open daily 8 a.m.-11 p.m. (closed New Year's Eve). CONCERTS: Dec. 6-9

"A Cazimero Christmas," featuring Island favorites Robert and Roland Cazimero, will offer Hawaiian and traditional holiday melodies at the Hawai'i Theatre.
