Japan's 'Firefly Dreams' wins top film festival prize

The Japanese film "Firefly Dreams," about a small-town girl adjusting to her parents' divorce, won the First Hawaiian Bank Golden Maile Award for best feature film, the top prize at the Hawai'i International Film Festival.
The awards were announced last night. Other prizes include:
First Hawaiian Bank Golden Maile Awards: "The Endurance: Shackleton's Legendary Antarctic Expedition" (United States) for best documentary; "My Mother India" (Australia), honorable mention, documentary; Sakae Kimura in "To End All Wars," honorable mention, acting.
Blockbuster Video Audience Awards: "Purple Sunset" (China), feature film; "Kiho'alu" (Hawai'i), documentary; "Forgotten Valor" (Hawai'i), short film.
NETPAC (Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema) Award: "Devils on the Doorstep" (China); "The Day Toshi Was Born" (Japan), special mention, student.
Aloha Airlines Hawai'i Film & Videomaker Award: "Blood of the Samurai" (Hawai'i).
The Film in Hawai'i Award, presented by the state: Disney.
The Eastman Kodak Award for Excellence in Cinematography: Caleb Deschanel.
The film festival, in its 21st year, continues at various theaters through Sunday on O'ahu. It runs today through Sunday on the Big Island, Maui and Kaua'i.
