The September 11th attack
UH to alert students about INS request

The University of Hawai'i at Manoa will send letters to each of its 1,300 foreign students notifying them that information concerning their residence, birthday, place of birth, nationality, and student status is being requested by the Immigration and Naturalization Service.

"We feel obligated to notify the students that this information is being requested," said Jim Manke, UH director of administrative services.

Because of the time this could take, the university has also been given a deadline extension by INS to produce information subpoenaed last week. The original deadline was set today.

The extension is open-ended, said Manke.

INS took the step of subpoenaing vital statistics on all foreign students at UH-Manoa, Hawai'i Pacific University and Chaminade as a first step in tracking international students living in Hawai'i.

The action is one effect of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks; at least two of the suspects were in the country on student visas, even though they weren't attending classes.

The action is meant to give government agencies better information about how many foreign students are complying with visa regulations. At this point, the INS said it does not know exactly how many people are studying in the United States on student visas.
