"SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE" (1998), 7 p.m., and "SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE," 10:30 p.m., NBC. A fictional view of William Shakespeare's life and how he developed ideas for his plays. Add a clever script, a fine director (John Madden) and an amazing performance by Gwyneth Paltrow as a woman, disguising as a boy to be in a Shakespeare play. Paltrow and the movie richly deserved their Academy Awards. Afterward, she hosts "Saturday Night Live," promoting her new film, "Shallow Hal."
"THE DISTRICT" 9 p.m., CBS. When a homeless vet is killed, Mannion (Craig T. Nelson) recalls his own Vietnam years in a compelling performance.
