PEARL CITY Rolling along in its own neighborhood, Pearl City High swept the Sam Choy's State Bowling Championships yesterday at Leeward Bowl.
The boys, led by individual champion Ryan Chang, amassed 8,777 pins over nine games to stop 'Aiea's three-year reign as state champions. 'Aiea, which won the O'ahu Interscholastic Association title last week, finished second with 8,671.
The Chargers' girls, who placed four of their five entrants in the top nine, obliterated the competition, scoring 7,995. Runner-up Hawai'i Baptist Academy was a distant second with 7,243. It was Pearl City's second consecutive and sixth overall state title.
"We just concentrated on our own game and didn't worry about what the other teams did," said senior Sky Hieda, the highest placing Charger at third place with 1,688.
Also winning medals for placing in the top 15 from Pearl City were Jodi-Ann Gum (5th, 1,635 pins), Mandi Ishihara (6th, 1,630) and Tara-Lyn Miyamoto (9th, 1,600). Cori Shinkawa, the fifth team member, was 37th with 1,442.
Chang, a senior who finished second in the OIA individual championships, rolled 1,947, including a 703 three-game series in yesterday's final session.
"I was thinking more about the team than the individual title," he said. "The second victory was just a blessing."
Chang edged Hilo's Sakae Watanabe (1,921) and Kailua's Bronson Teramoto (1,911), the OIA individual champion.
The last time the Pearl City boys won a state title was a year before Chang entered the school. It was the fourth overall crown for the Chargers.
The only other Charger to medal with Chang was Jesse Cummings (6th, 1,885). Also competing for the Chargers were Jasen Ono (28th, 1,711), Michael Saiki (38th, 1,662), Joshua Wong (59th, 1,572) and substitute Radley Balde (110th, 131).
Freshman Shaina Carnate of Kapolei won the girls title with 1,745. Nanakuli's Desiree Mariani was runner-up for the second straight year with 1,718.
Carnate, 14, became Kapolei's second individual state champion. Last year, a swimmer won gold in the breast stroke.
"I just wanted to make my parents happy and everybody proud," said Carnate, whose 235 was the girls' highest game.
'Aiea's Jason Kotani posted the highest game for the boys at 277.
