No ka oi notes: The Lunas have seven two-way players, including quarterback Kainoa Casco, who also plays strong safety ... Lunas' new athletic director Joe Balangitao coached the MIL's first state tournament entrant while he was at Baldwin in 1999.

Marching in: Lee, the winningest coach in state history, is 45-3-1 against teams from the four other leagues. The Hawai'i teams to beat Lee are Kailua (1972 preseason), Leilehua (1984 O'ahu Prep Bowl) and Kahuku (2000 state final) ... the ILH's 65-player roster limit does not apply for the tournament, so the Crusaders may suit up some 100 players.

Coach: Ed Rocha (3rd season, 19-13)

Tournament history: Debut

Streak: 4 wins

Advertiser ranking: 10

Wet and wild: Rain the past three weeks at heavily-used Wong Stadium has turned a grass field into a mug bog, which to some degree is an advantage to Hilo-based teams used to elements. But Kailua has a major size advantage on the line. Waiakea's heaviest player is 6-1, 260-pound tackle Dustin Papalimu. Kailua rotates 300-pound linemen with more 300-pound linemen ... the Warriors beat a state tournament participant, Lahainaluna, 13-7, in non-league play.

  • W, Konawaena, 14-0

KOBAYASHI
Waimea Menehune

Record: 7-1, KIF champions

Coach: Jon Kobayashi (9th season, 51-2-1 league record only)

Tournament history: 1999, 2000; 1-2

Streak: 7 wins

Advertiser ranking: 8

Garden Isle gathering: Waimea's fan base consists of some elderly spectators who usually don't make the drive from the west side at night because there are no street lights en route to Lihu'e. The Menehune's home is Hanapepe Ball Park ... Waimea lists 28 players on its roster, but two are injured, leaving 26 available for action. Everyone plays, Kobayashi said.
