LightNet finishes GST acquisition

Pacific LightNet Inc. said yesterday it has completed its acquisition of the Hawai'i assets of GST Telecommunications Inc, a voice and data telecommunications company with 3,000 Hawai'i telephone customers and 14,000 Internet accounts.

Pacific LightNet is a new Hawai'i company formed by TM Communications Hawai'i, a subsidiary of Japanese trading giant Tomen Corp., and NextNet Investments.

Oceanic adds more ISP access

Oceanic Time Warner Cable has added high-speed service for EarthLink and AOL subscribers to its cable-modem Internet menu, which until yesterday was limited to Road Runner service.

Time Warner Cable, Oceanic's parent, is the first cable company in the country to be host to multiple high-speed Internet service providers.

The basic monthly fee for any of the three is $44.95, said Oceanic spokesman Kit Beuret. However, he added, various packages and introductory discounts may be available through the individual ISPs.

Charities brace for slow season

The holiday season is the time for giving, but charities know that this year may be different. Many people already have given as much as their budgets will allow.

To address this issue, six leaders from the nonprofit and business community will meet tomorrow to discuss the impact on nonprofit services and community giving after Sept. 11.

"This is a discussion, not a presentation. Maybe somebody has figured out something that works. We're all scared to mention it but we're all scared not to mention Sept. 11," said David Earles, president of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Aloha Chapter.

Earles said there was no significant decrease in donations to stimulate the symposium. "It's just intuition at this point," he said.

The panel will address observations and forecasts from different nonprofit sectors, corporate support of nonprofit agencies, as well as creative strategies for fund-raising and a mainland perspective.

The Honolulu Academy of Arts will play host to the free panel discussion in the Luce Pavilion from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Information: 589-2407.
