Local firm wins Navy contract

The Navy has contracted with a Honolulu-based company to provide repair and maintenance services to Navy surface ships at Pearl Harbor, employing 150 to 200 workers.

The contract with Honolulu Shipyard Inc. was signed Nov. 6, said U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie, D-Hawai'i. Honolulu Shipyard, a member company of Pacific Shipyards International, was selected to provide the services for one year, with options to extend the contract.

No exact dollar amount is specified in the contract because the scope of work will be defined for each ship that will be serviced.

"This is good news for our economy," said Abercrombie, a senior member of the House Armed Services Committee. "I'm very pleased that a Hawai'i company got the contract. It shows Island firms can compete successfully with their Mainland counterparts when they have a level playing field."
