Korea beats U.S. in World Cup volleyball

Advertiser Staff

Korea defeated the U.S. Women's National Volleyball Team, 25-18, 25-21, 19-25, 25-23, yesterday in the opener of the 2001 World Grand Champions Cup in Saitama, Japan.

Korea took command from the start, displaying defensive technical skills that kept the U.S. from establishing momentum until midway into the third game. However, two U.S. service errors late in the fourth game proved to be the undoing for the Americans, who committed almost twice as many errors in the match as the Koreans.

"This afternoon we could have lots of excuses why we lost but good teams learn from their mistakes and come back better," said U.S. hitter Therese Crawford, a former University of Hawai'i standout.

Heather Bown, another former Wahine, led the U.S. with 14 kills and three blocks.
