"Amelie": Bursting with imagination and having seen her share of tragedy and fantasy, Amelie is not like the other girls. When she grows up, she becomes a waitress in a Montmartre bar run by a former dancer. Amelie enjoys simple pleasures until she discovers that her goal in life is to help others. To that end, she invents all sorts of tricks that allow her to intervene incognito into other people's lives, including an imbibing concierge and her hypochondriac neighbor. But Amelie's most difficult case turns out to be Nino Quicampoix, a lonely sex-shop employee who collects photos abandoned at coin-operated photo booths. Opens tomorrow at Dole Cannery 18 Theatres, Kahala 8-Plex. (R).

"Novocaine": This quirky dark comedy tells the story of a successful dentist (Steve Martin) who suddenly finds himself the target of a con gone bad. Martin becomes a murder suspect after a patient, played by Helena Bonham Carter (Fight Club), seduces him into prescribing drugs for her. Laura Dern will portray Martin's dental hygienist and steady girlfriend who is seemingly pure on the surface but capable of evil deeds. Opens tomorrow at Varsity Twin. (R).

"Our Lady of the Assassins": Adapted from the novel La Virgen de los Sicarios by its author, Fernando Vallejo, this movie is an exploration of morality and mortality in Medell’n, Colombia. Returning to his hometown after a 30-year exile, Fernando (German Jaramillo) is introduced by a mutual friend to a teenage boy, Alexis (Anderson Ballesteros), who quickly becomes Fernando's lover. Alexis has grown up in a very different Medell’n than the one Fernando remembers — one that is ruled by the drug trade. No one is safe in this crime-ridden city where car jacking, drive-by shootings and spontaneous murders are part of everyday life. Although Fernando is disgusted by the constant violence, young Alexis perpetuates the cycle by shooting anyone who bothers Fernando. Ultimately, Alexis's tactless actions catch up with him and Fernando is left alone to deal with the sad consequences of the violence and poverty that are so prevalent in the city. Opens tomorrow at Restaurant Row Theatres. (R)
